    The Heart Is Home

Ruby June Cotter was born June 12,2019. On September 4th, 2019, Ruby was diagnosed with a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. The left side of her heart was enlarged and overworking to pump blood to the rest of her body. When Ruby arrived at Stony Brook ER, she was vomiting, blue, lethargic, had trouble breathing, was not eating and was hypothermic. It happened overnight to what was seemingly a normal 2 month old baby. If she wasn't brought to the ER when she was, she would not be with us today. Once the diagnosis was determined, she was transported that night to NY Presbyterian hospital. She was appointed a team of over 11+ doctors and nurses. Everyone was hopeful this condition would be treatable with medication alone. However, once support was removed, Ruby was still unable to remain stable. She experienced a heart rate of over 300 beats per minute. One week after admittance, she received her Berlin heart. A Berlin heart is a mechanical heart that attaches to her failing heart, and pumps blood for her. She was listed the following day for heart transplant. Ruby has had a long journey, but on December 22nd, 2019 she received her gift of life. Her recovery exceeded everyone’s expectations and was able to be discharged 2 weeks after transplant. Ruby's family still has a long road ahead with check ups and medication as this is not a cure, and she may need another transplant in the future. “The Heart Is Home” is a different take on “Home Is Where The Heart Is.” Without the help of family, friends and the support of the community, we may not be where we are today with Ruby. The heart is home and we have you to thank!
