Thinking About Going Custom? Here’s What You Should Know:

You’ve decided to go the custom route, how exciting! We absolutely love custom design. Even if you’re exploring other designers (though we’d be honored to be the one), here are a few things to keep in mind before starting your journey.

Why Custom?

Custom jewelry lets you bring your exact vision to life — because not everything you dream up exists online. If you’ve been endlessly searching for that perfect piece and still can’t find it, you’re likely the ideal candidate for custom design.

If there are elements of certain pieces you love but other parts you don’t, save those images and circle what speaks to you. Even a quick sketch — no art degree required — helps bring your vision to life and gives us a great starting point.

Explore Your Style

Before meeting with a designer, spend some time discovering what you love. Try on jewelry in person at different shops and pay attention not just to your style, but to what flatters the shape and size of your fingers and hands. You’ll feel more confident moving forward once you’ve seen how different styles feel and fit.

Find the Right Designer

Reach out to designers whose aesthetic aligns with yours and ask about their process and pricing. You want someone who understands your ideas, adds creative insight, and makes you feel confident and excited along the way. If you’re drawn to their work, chances are they’ll be able to refine and elevate your ideas in ways that feel true to you.

Understand the Process

Every designer approaches custom differently. Ask if they provide sketches, CAD renderings, or physical prototypes. At King + Curated, we often use a mix — from simple sketches and full 3D designs to gel boxes for stone placement and printable to-scale PDFs so you can “try on” your design at home. For more intricate projects, we can even create 3D wax models. The goal: no surprises, just confidence in what’s to come.

Be Mindful of Timing

The custom process takes time — usually several weeks or more. You’ll need time to review stones, approve designs, and make any adjustments before production begins. Complex pieces or busy seasons can extend timelines, so it’s best to start early. The more time you give your designer, the more enjoyable and creative the process will be for everyone involved.

Consider Your Budget

Custom pricing varies based on materials, design complexity, and craftsmanship. To get a sense of cost, check your designer’s portfolio or website for comparable pieces. Remember, small studios like ours craft pieces by hand and give each design personalized attention — something big-box jewelers simply can’t replicate. That extra investment ensures a piece (and experience) that’s entirely yours.

Do Your Homework

Before your consultation, spend time refining your ideas and budget. Having clarity upfront saves time, avoids unnecessary design revisions, and keeps costs under control. Your designer will guide you on what’s possible and offer creative solutions that align with your goals.

Inspiration vs. Imitation

It may sound obvious, but it happens often enough that it’s worth repeating: avoid asking a designer to copy another’s work. Inspiration is wonderful, copying is not. Instead, pull elements from multiple pieces to create something that feels personal and uniquely yours. Respecting other artists’ work ensures integrity and originality in your design.

Limit Outside Opinions

When it comes to custom jewelry, trust your instincts. Too many outside opinions can muddy your vision. Unless someone truly shares your taste, their feedback can easily steer you away from what you love. We’ve seen countless clients talk themselves out of their dream design after consulting family members who had different styles. Remember... this piece is for you.

A Final Thought

We wish you all the best on your custom journey, wherever it takes you,  but we’d love to be part of it. Our goal is to create something that feels deeply personal and beautifully crafted, every step of the way.
