The Colors We Keep: Zircons holding space

A dive into the magical hues of Zircon and how they activate memories, and inspired creating a collection dedicated to making personal talismans.

Recently, I came across a collection of zircons that I could not walk away from.

There were hundreds of them, in a wide array of colors and cuts. The warmest, most beautiful shades. As I sat going through them, turning each one in the light, I felt a reassuring wash of memories come over me.

It felt like rummaging through old photographs. Only what I was holding in my hands were stones.

Somehow, their colors brought little pieces of my life back to me. A feeling. A place. Something I had not thought about in years. I felt so connected to them that choosing my usual three or four became impossible.

I pulled a few aside. Then a few more. After a couple of hours, I had narrowed hundreds down to fifty.

Fifty stones I wanted to spend more time with. Fifty stones I wanted you to see.

The beauty of their differences

The stone dealer and I shared in the admiration. He watched me linger over them, and told me they had been sitting for years. For whatever reason, they had not been moving.

I was taken aback. How could something this beautiful be waiting so long to be chosen?

I found myself wondering why zircon does not seem to get nearly enough attention in jewelry on a broader scale. And yet, looking at this particular collection, I could see why it might be a difficult fit for a business built around making the same design over and over again..

Each stone had its own shade, proportions, and personality. Repeating one exact look across a large collection would be a challenge for big production house, but for us- this was a welcomed task. To my eye, these stones invited a different approach: choosing one for its individuality and letting the design grow around it. My interest in them got deeper as I realized how many beautiful memories they could be attached to and how they could unlock a moment someone would love to revisit.

That is what drew me in. Every time I thought I had found my favorite, another would catch the light.

What I felt while looking through that collection of Zircons was something I wanted to make room for: the possibility that a color could bring you back to a part of your life you had almost forgotten. One that reactivates a memory.

Why a color can feel so familiar

Sometimes, the first thing we remember is a color.

The blue of the water on a trip when we finally felt ourselves exhale. The green of a garden where someone we loved spent their mornings. The particular pink of the sky on an evening we wished would last a little longer.

Before we find the words for what that moment meant, there is the color. And with it, something familiar returns.

Research offers some insight into this connection. In a study of photographs of natural scenes, researchers found that color helped people recognize images later compared with grayscale versions. Within that experiment, color was part of what helped a scene become memorable.

Psychologists Stephen Palmer and Karen Schloss have also proposed that our color preferences are shaped by our feelings about the things we associate with those colors. Their research supports the idea that we may love a color partly because we love what it brings to mind.

Perhaps that is one reason a particular shade can feel so personal.

For you, a warm golden color might belong to a kitchen filled with morning light. A soft pink might recall flowers someone always brought home. A deep green might hold the feeling of a place where you were free to be yourself.

When we choose a gemstone, those associations deserve a place in the conversation.

A memory without an heirloom

In jewelry, we are often leaning on a memory.

Sometimes there is already something tangible: a grandmother’s ring, a pendant given on an important birthday, a stone passed through generations of hands.

Other times, the thing we cherish left no object behind.

The house belongs to someone else now. The person who made us feel safe is gone. A pivotal chapter has ended, and we cannot step back into it, however deeply we wish we could.

But we may still remember its colors.

Those details can become the beginning of something new. We can choose a stone that recalls a place, a person, or the way we felt at a particular moment in our lives. We can give that memory a form we can touch and wear.

We can also carry stories handed down to us: a place described by someone we love, a person we never had the chance to meet, a family memory preserved in a photograph. Those connections can become part of a piece, too.

A personal talisman

This is one of the possibilities I love most about making jewelry.

A personal talisman can hold whatever we most need to remember: love, light, happiness, tenderness. The joy of feeling fully alive. The strength we found at a turning point. The reassuring knowledge that we have been loved.

A ring we notice as we move through the day. A pendant we reach for when we need steadiness. A flash of color that brings a cherished feeling close again.

Looking through those zircons, I felt the beginnings of that connection over and over. And I wanted to give you the time and space to find your own.

So these fifty stones are here, on loan, waiting to be seen, held, and turned in the light. Each is available to choose as the beginning of a piece of your own.

My hope is that one will catch your attention in a way you cannot quite explain at first. That its color will bring a memory to the surface. That you will look at it and think: There you are. I remember.
